Muslims have two major festivals that they celebrate; the first is Eid al-fitr 2012 / Hari Raya Puasa 2012 / Idul Fitri and the other one is Eid al-Adha 2012 / Hari Raya Haji 2012. Eid al-Adha festival originates from the Quran, their holy book. In addition, it is known as Hari Raya Haji, Qurban, Hari Raya Kurban or Sacrifice Festival. When will Muslims celebrate Hari Raya Haji 2012 / Eid al-Adha 2012?
According to the calendar of Lunar Islamic, the festival falls on 10th day, during Dhul Hijja month in every year. The festival goes for at least two or three days, some celebrate even more than that, the duration varies depending on which country celebrating the festival. The celebration comes just after pilgrims conduct their Haji. Just after end of Ramadan month, some seventy days later, pilgrims hold their Haji. Since the date of the festival goes with Islamic lunar calendar, those following Gregorian calendar celebrate their festival in different date of the month. The festival will fall on 26 October 2012, which will be on a Friday.
The festival depends on where the moon will position itself, therefore Islamic authorities will announce the date of the celebration, when the festival is close. Children, women and men who come from Muslim community should dress in the best outfit from their wardrobe. With this fine dressing, they are now ready to perform a prayer called Eid. In this celebration, Muslims remember how God forgave Ibrahim, when he was told to sacrifice his only son Isaac. This sacrifice proved how Ibrahim was obedient to God, which was a test and he succeeded. God provided him with a sheep to offer as a sacrifice instead of his own son.
The sacrifice commemorates how Ibrahim sacrificed his only son. However, the animals to be sacrificed should be one year and above, and be of good health to be acceptable to the gods. As the sacrifice ceremony continues, Muslims will be calling Allah’s name, together with offering supplication and statement, just as the manner that Prophet Muhammad said. During Eid al-Adha 2012 / Hari Raya Haji 2012, the meat is divided into three parts. A third of the meat sacrificed, is shared among the hungry, poor, as a sign of celebrating together with the less unfortunate. The other third is given to friends and family. What remains is what family will cook, and shared together with families and friends. Muslims are expected to pay a visit to their parents, friends and kin.
Many countries celebrate the festival like South Asia, Africa, South East Asia, and Middle East. It’s also one of the public holidays in Singapore, Philippines, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Muslim community shows their charitable practices during Eid al-Adha 2012 / Hari Raya Haji 2012. They exert efforts in making sure that every impoverished individual goes without having food to take during those Eid days. This is the main goal of this Muslim festival.
